Govt, int’l cybersec firms to develop cyber security strategy [source: observerbd]

The government is going to develop a cyber-security strategy in collaboration with international firms NRD CS and Global Cyber Security Capacity Center (GCSCC) of University of Oxford to protect Bangladesh’s cyberspace.
A team of NRD CS and GCSCC arrived in Dhaka on Monday and met officials and stakeholders to discuss Bangladesh’s advancement in digitations and current status of cyber space aimed at developing cyber security strategy, assessment of critical infrastructure protection strategy and creating a cyber-risk assessment framework for Critical Information Infrastructures (CIIs), said a media release on Tuesday.
During a meeting with Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) Parthapratim Deb, director of GCSCC Professor Michael Goldsmith said the Cyber Security Capacity Maturity Model for Nations (CMM) developed by the GCSCC has been deployed more than 60 countries of the world to develop an effective cyber security strategy that has helped mitigate the fast growing cyber threats.
Later, the team held a separate meeting with the stakeholders including academia, ICT trade bodies and business leaders to know the current status of cyber space and its security for development of a cyber security strategy.
Michael Goldsmith told the meeting that the CMM developed by the GCSCC is being deployed to develop the cyber security strategy for Bangladesh.
But, prior to that the NRD CS and GCSCC team will assess the cyber security policy and strategy, cyber culture and society, cyber security education, training and skills, legal and regulatory frameworks and standards, organizations and technologies in line with the CMM.
While briefing on this NRD CS Business Development Director Romuaqldas Lecicks said they will develop the Cyber Security Strategy within 12 months after reviewing the Bangladesh’s national cyber security strategy ratified in 2014 and taking opinion of the stakeholders in this regard.
Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project Director Md. Rezaul Karim and Deputy Director Tarique M. Barkatullah and Cyber Security Expert and Managing Director of NRD Bangladesh Sabbir Hossain, ICT trade body and business leaders, cyber security experts were present.
Lecicks said after introduction of national Cyber Security strategy it would enhance capacity to address cyber-crimes as well as mitigate countrywide risk and economic viability.
The NRD CS will -provide a basic cyber security package for the owners of national CIIs by establishing common taxonomy of standards, guidelines and practices to strengthen BD critical infrastructure resilience to cyber threats.     -BSS
