FIRST Annual CTF-2020: BGD e-Gov CIRT Secured 19th Place

As being a full member of FIRST, Bangladesh Government’s Cyber Security unit BGD e-GOV CIRT took part in annual CTF and achieved 19th position among 278 teams from all over the world.

FIRST is the global Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams. It is an international confederation of trusted computer incident response teams who cooperatively handle computer security incidents and promote incident prevention programs. It is a premier organization and recognized global leader in incident response. Membership in FIRST enables incident response teams to more effectively respond to security incidents by providing access to best practices, tools, and trusted communication with member teams.

They arrange annual CTF (Capture the Flag) competition which focuses on simulated real-life Cyber Security problems/incidents. The Challenge is a series of technical problems designed to provide a fun opportunity to utilize creative technical problem-solving abilities to solve incident response inspired challenges. This year due to pandemic situation the CTF went Virtual. The CTF consisted of a group of technical exercises where the participants must find an answer, a flag, and submit to the CTF platform. Every correct flag submitted increases a team’s score. New challenges were released daily during the event. Categories of challenges included: network, cryptography, reverse engineering, programming, miscellaneous, puzzle and others. A new addition for this year was a collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to offer some challenges related to Industrial Control Systems (ICS), in addition to the types of previously mentioned.

The CTF started on 22 June 2020 & finished on 26 June, 2020.
